Abstract

Relevant recently-published studies on the syntax of 2nd and 3rd century vulgar Italian advocates a debate upon methodology and documentation. The article distinguishes among different types of the so-called pleonastic or para- hypotactic 'sì' and discusses the syntactic behavior of the adverb operator: exclusive anaphoricity, the subsequent impossibility of initial position, the strictly Medieval chronology of the phenomenon. Northern dialects, in particular, testify to a duration from Veronese riddle to the contemporary age.
