The paper focuses on the semantic field of seeing and visuality used in the murder scenes in three of Seneca’s tragedies: Agamemnon, Medea and Thyestes. It is argued that a greater consideration of film studies and gaze theories applied to Seneca’s dramatic texts generally, and to these three tragedies in particular, offers new insights into intertextual and intratextual contexts, irrespective of the almost unanswerable question as to whether these texts were ever performed.

Abstract

The paper focuses on the semantic field of seeing and visuality used in the murder scenes in three of Seneca’s tragedies: Agamemnon, Medea and Thyestes. It is argued that a greater consideration of film studies and gaze theories applied to Seneca’s dramatic texts generally, and to these three tragedies in particular, offers new insights into intertextual and intratextual contexts, irrespective of the almost unanswerable question as to whether these texts were ever performed.
