This paper discusses the topic of the commemoration of war and war dead in the ancient Greek world in the framework of the cross-fertilization between war studies and memory studies which has increasingly taking place, in the historical research and in the humanities more broadly, starting from the ‘70s of the past century. After an overview of the relevant scholarly panorama on the binomial war and memory, and a special focus on the development of memory studies as an academic discipline, it discusses the commemoration of war and the war dead in a comparative perspective between ancient and modern times, with special attention to the issue of trauma, and eventually analyzes closely the ways, forms and meanings of the commemoration of the war dead in Classical Athens, and elsewhere in ancient Greece.

Abstract
This paper discusses the topic of the commemoration of war and war dead in the ancient Greek world in the framework of the cross-fertilization between war studies and memory studies which has increasingly taking place, in the historical research and in the humanities more broadly, starting from the ‘70s of the past century. After an overview of the relevant scholarly panorama on the binomial war and memory, and a special focus on the development of memory studies as an academic discipline, it discusses the commemoration of war and the war dead in a comparative perspective between ancient and modern times, with special attention to the issue of trauma, and eventually analyzes closely the ways, forms and meanings of the commemoration of the war dead in Classical Athens, and elsewhere in ancient Greece.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione
