Ultra-wideband based pulse radars have been an active research topic over the last decades because of their accurate positioning, resistance to multipath fading, and narrow-band interference immunity. Usually, they rely on expensive or custom-based designs that have hampered the wide diffusion of these solutions. This paper presents a study of a cheap ultrawide-band bistatic radar based on commercial off-the-shelf DecaWave's DWM1001 UWB transceiver. This study confirms the possibility of using the UWB radios as components for radar development, with a mean error on the estimated distance below 20 cm.

Abstract

Ultra-wideband based pulse radars have been an active research topic over the last decades because of their accurate positioning, resistance to multipath fading, and narrow-band interference immunity. Usually, they rely on expensive or custom-based designs that have hampered the wide diffusion of these solutions. This paper presents a study of a cheap ultrawide-band bistatic radar based on commercial off-the-shelf DecaWave's DWM1001 UWB transceiver. This study confirms the possibility of using the UWB radios as components for radar development, with a mean error on the estimated distance below 20 cm.
