This essay deals with the history of mulberry growing landscape in the Rovereto territory and in the Vallagarina from XVI century to nowadays. The work is based on a geographical and historical micro-analysis approach; the range of historical sources involves cartographies, iconographies and textual documents and observational evidences. The output of the analysis allows to identify the mulberry trees spread and the evolution of rural practices and knowledges linked to their management. In the past, mulberry trees cultivation was a multiple system of resource use, stricktly linked with sericulture, but also with agro-sylvo-pastoral activities; in XIX century, this interrelated system was hindered by agronomic sciences devoted to the “modernization” of silk production. Abstract

Former and forgotten practices of environmental resources management, as the areas of trees plantation and graft and pruning methods have been identified. Results are direct to an “applyed historical geography” for the preservation and enhancement in broader project of handcrafted silk production recovery. Mulberry trees landscape are indeed a paradigmatic case of “bio-cultural heritage” and “post-cultural landscape” result of the interrelation between environment and human activities.
