In this article, the author proposes an interpretation of the line sofrir m'estoit in gotrisach, which is added to a madrigal reported in Giovanni Sercambi's Novelle and also attested by other sources. The line turns out to be Bernabò Visconti's motto, which is also found on his funerary monument. The first part is in French and rises no problems: sofrir m’estoit "I must suffer". The second part, as hinted at by Sercambi, is in German and may be interpreted as in guter Sache "in a good cause".
