Selective collection (SC) efficiencies are growing in many European Union countries. As a consequence the composition of residual municipal solid waste (RMSW) is changing not only because of their economic development. Thus the input of RMSW treatment plants is expected to be unsteady. The present paper analyses five scenarios of SC and the consequences on the generation of Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) by bio-drying and post-treatments. The recent regulation on SRF classification is taken into account: energy content, Cl and Hg concentrations are assessed. Discussion of the possibility of generating SRF of different quality (even with SC acting as a virtual pre-treatment) is presented.
