The selective collection sector has undergone a remarkable development in recent years, but there are situations in which waste management does not provide a view of selective collection, such as institutional buildings: offices, schools, universities and hospitals. This paper gives a proposal of guidelines to optimize selective collection in institutional buildings, especially in university campus. Guidelines have been outlined starting from qualitative and quantitative analyses carried out in two high schools; in the first part of the paper analysis results are presented and compared. In the second part of the paper analyses carried out in an university campus are presented. Furthermore the adaptation of the previously outlined guidelines for campus is described. Finally the “weight” of schools and campus into waste municipal production is estimated.
