The synthesis of 'optimal' compromise sum and difference patterns subject to arbitrary sidelobe bounds is addressed by means of a simple and effective sub-arraying technique based on the optimal excitation method. The results obtained compare positively with those from state-of-the-art methods in terms of both performance and computational indexes.
