The total number of collected questionnaires was 2101 (50.2% from males and 49.8% from females); 92.1% of the sample had chronological age between 12 and 13 years. Alcohol was assumed at least once by 80% of the sample; 38% of participants assumed alcohol below the age 10 years. Usually, the first experience with alcohol was within family. Alcoholpops were the more popular drinks, followed by beer, wine, aperitif, strong drinks. Drunk was reported by 24.4% (North: 23.4%; Centrum: 25.9%; South with Islands: 24.8%). Large number of adolescents reported poor education versus alcohol risks. A high proportion of adolescents had experimented with alcohol by 13 years of age. The SIMA/OPGA survey permitted to achieve better knowledge on adolescent alcoholic behavior to use in preventive strategies.

Alcohol use by adolescents is increasing. In Italy few data are available on alcohol use/abuse by early adolescent people. The Società Italiana di Medicina dell’Adolescenza (SIMA) and the Laboratorio Scientifico of Osservatorio Permanente sui Giovani e l’Alcol (OPGA) developed a survey on the experiences with alcohol by 11-15 years Italian students. A specific questionnaire were developed and administered to the students of 100 Italian classes of middle school distributed on the entire country.
