In this article, we will focus on the Italian translations of Proverbes dramatiques. First, we will attempt to define this theatrical genre in order to highlight the dynamics that govern the plots of these plays. Then, we will discuss the most prolific playwrights since the 17th century. Finally, we will present the Italian translations of the Proverbes dramatiques by Alfred de Vigny (Quitte pour la peur) and Alfred de Musset (On ne badine pas avec l’amour) in order to analyze their paratexts and understand how the prefaces and translators present and comment on this theatrical genre, which is so particular, to Italian readers. We will also study comments on the translation found in the paratexts, since these plays cite or evoke proverbs (sayings) that are always difficult to translate. We will focus primarily on three elements of the paratext in these plays translated into Italian: the titles, the prefaces or afterwords, and the footnotes. Throughout our reflection, we will mainly refer to the theoretical works of Gérard Genette, but also to the works of other theorists who have studied margins and peripheral discourses of a literary text.
