This contribution serves as an introduction to the special issue The Use of Human Rights Language in International and EU Law, which brings together articles from participants in the XXI Conference of Young Scholars of International Legal Studies, held in Trento on 5 and 6 December 2024. The special issue investigates the multifaceted nature of human rights language – its diverse forms, the variety of actors employing it and the purposes it serves. It also considers the potential for abuse or misuse of such language, by highlighting both the visible and the hidden risks that the use of human rights language may entail.
