Human trafficking, like other criminal and organized activities, has undergone a process of digitalization over the past twenty years, increasingly studied by criminological literature. The changes introduced into these activities by new technologies call for the verification of the validity of globally established definitions of trafficking, first and foremost the one provided by Article 3 of the UN Protocol. While the applicability of the definition to cases where a phase of trafficking involves the use of new technologies seems indisputable, the evaluation of fully digitalized scenarios, where the entire process occurs online, is more complex. The analysis of potential interpretative perspectives opens the discussion to other issues regarding the defining aspects of trafficking, which go beyond merely digital aspects.
