THE AUTOR IN THE EDITORIAL INDUSTRY. THE MANUAL DE CONFESSORES OF MARTÍN DE AZPILCUETA AND THE PRODUCTION OF NORMATIVE KNOWLEDGE IN THE ATLANTIC WORLD DURING THE PRINTING PRESS AGE. Within the framework of a methodological approach that sees the materiality of the production, circulation and consumption of books as an important element in the study of the processes of knowledge production, the article analyses the case of the Manual de confessores by the Spanish canonist Martín de Azpilcueta (1492-1586), better known as Doctor Navarro, as paradigmatic for understanding the role of the "author" in the publishing industry in the early modern age. It shows in particular how the constant process of updating and authoritative transformations through new editions of the Manual went hand in hand with Azpilcue-ta's conscious use of the regulatory instrument of printing privileges. In particular, through the analysis of legal paratexts and material evidence shown in some copies of the Manual I examined, the article hi-ghlights how privileges allowed Azpilcueta to control not only the production but also the circulation and in some respects the sale of the book itself. It was also thanks to the "author’s" active role in the pu-blishing industry, that the Manual became the reference text for confessors at the end of the 16th century and the basis for some very successful compendia, by theologians who were members of the Society of Je-sus, written from Rome or directly from the mission territories. This was the case with the compendia by Pietro Alagona and Esteban de Ávila. The first circulated widely to the point that an edition was printed in Japan. The second, written in Lima, was printed in Europe, and had a very wide circulation also and espe-cially in the American territories.

Abstract
The second, written in Lima, was printed in Europe, and had a very wide circulation also and espe-cially in the American territories.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
