Some unpublished autographed documents of patients admitted to the Provincial Psychiatric Hospital of Pergine Valsugana (Trento) between 1913 and 1921 are published here and linguistically analyzed to verify how much of their deviance from the scholastic–grammatical standard is to be attributed to interference of the dialect or to typical behaviors of popular writers of low social status, “poor mad” (“the poor are mad”, said Zavattini).
