The chapter explores the traits of Julius Nyerere’s leadership throughout his time in office, from the fight for the independence of Tanganyika, when he articulated his national project in pan-African terms, through his activity as the President of Tanzania, with the promotion of Ujamaa as an ideology and the plan to build a socialist state based on self-reliance, until the 1980s, when he became an inspiring voice of the Third World around projects designed to promote international solidarity and justice. It argues that Nyerere was a committed leader, at times stubborn, a man of high moral principles who demanded others to be as devout to the cause of African political and economic liberation as he was.

Abstract
The chapter explores the traits of Julius Nyerere’s leadership throughout his time in office, from the fight for the independence of Tanganyika, when he articulated his national project in pan-African terms, through his activity as the President of Tanzania, with the promotion of Ujamaa as an ideology and the plan to build a socialist state based on self-reliance, until the 1980s, when he became an inspiring voice of the Third World around projects designed to promote international solidarity and justice. It argues that Nyerere was a committed leader, at times stubborn, a man of high moral principles who demanded others to be as devout to the cause of African political and economic liberation as he was.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione
