In recent years, representatives of States have increasingly had recourse to social networks in order to express their position on matters of international concern. This paper analyses whether States can acquire international obligations through these new means of communication. It is argued that the legal framework of unilateral acts of States can be applied to posts on social media, provided that they manifest a clear will to be bound and they originate from the accounts of individuals endowed with the power to bind the State. In particular, the already existing criteria concerning unilateral declara- tions appear flexible enough to be employed for the detection of binding promises made through social media
