After a recognition of the ancient and medieval theorizations about the rethorical relationships between the literary genres of theatre and Aesopic fable, the essay focuses on the links between Phaedrus’ work and Publilius Syrus’ mimes. This connection, even if not recognisable from textual quotations and correspondances, is particularly evident in the use of the iambic senarius, a ‘popular’ vers not appreciated from the Augustan poets, and in the capability of defining the characters of their protagonists for moral purposes.

Abstract

After a recognition of the ancient and medieval theorizations about the rethorical relationships between the literary genres of theatre and Aesopic fable, the essay focuses on the links between Phaedrus’ work and Publilius Syrus’ mimes. This connection, even if not recognisable from textual quotations and correspondances, is particularly evident in the use of the iambic senarius, a ‘popular’ vers not appreciated from the Augustan poets, and in the capability of defining the characters of their protagonists for moral purposes.
