This study provocatively revisits a widespread commonplace : that etiquette manners and formal rules contributed to decreasing acts of interpersonal violence in Renaissance Italy. Analyzing the behavioural rules codified by good manners in different social situations, this paper aims to showing how their violation or inversion outlined a language of enmity used commonly to provoke violent conflicts.
