This paper provides an update on the foundation myths of Magnesia on the Maeander, starting from the epigraphic account of IMagn. 17, which records the anonymous ktisis of the city. Given the textual analysis of IMagn. 17, as well as the comparison between this inscription and the literary sources about Magnesia, three different traditions can be identified: the Magnesian-Thessalian, the Cretan and the Lycian. Further traditions emerge from the analysis of literary and epigraphic sources concerning Magnesia, namely a Delphic, a Spartan and an indigenous tradition. A full understanding of the genesis and the development of these traditions is achieved by comparing them with the general, wider framework of the Greek colonies of Asia Minor.

Abstract
This paper provides an update on the foundation myths of Magnesia on the Maeander, starting from the epigraphic account of IMagn. 17, which records the anonymous ktisis of the city. Given the textual analysis of IMagn. 17, as well as the comparison between this inscription and the literary sources about Magnesia, three different traditions can be identified: the Magnesian-Thessalian, the Cretan and the Lycian. Further traditions emerge from the analysis of literary and epigraphic sources concerning Magnesia, namely a Delphic, a Spartan and an indigenous tradition. A full understanding of the genesis and the development of these traditions is achieved by comparing them with the general, wider framework of the Greek colonies of Asia Minor.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione
