This paper addresses the limits of linguistic and cultural translatability of the divine attribute ἀρχηγέτης/-ις. Three case studies shed some new light on the different meanings and functions of this epithet: far from describing exclusively the ‘colonial’ traits of a god, the use of ἀρχηγέτης/-ις points rather – one at a time or simultaneously – to his genetic, tutelary and political nature.
