Schuchardt su lingue nazionali e lingue imperiali

Here is presented the translation of Hugo Schuchardt, XI. «Sprache und Nationalität», from HugoSchuchardt-Brevier 1928. It is preceded by an in- troductory essay dedicated to the reflection of the Graz linguist on topics such as the relationship between national languages and universal languages, or between national languages and imperial languages; the concept of denationalization; the effects of bilingualism and linguistic contact; xenophobia and xenophilia; linguistic chauvinism; the impos- sibility of building a scala linguarum with qualitative assessements. Schuchardt’s war pamphlets, not anthologized by Spitzer, are re-read and re-examinated in the light of the Graz linguist’s long-standing fidelity to some fundamental principles.
