Smart roads and Autonomous Driving Vehicles (AV and CAV) technologies represent the new paradigm of mobility, therefore the design process of urban roads, highways, road intersections and interchanges could radically change in the near future. Therefore, it is urgent to check whether existing motorways, already in service, can be adapted to the new AV and CAV technologies. The article proposes new road geometric design criteria based on the potential performances of automated vehicles and a traffic model to take into consideration the effect of mix traffic flows (Autonomous Driving Vehicles and Traditional ones). These models have been used for analyzing two existing Italian motorways belonging to the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

Abstract
Smart roads and Autonomous Driving Vehicles (AV and CAV) technologies represent the new paradigm of mobility, therefore the design process of urban roads, highways, road intersections and interchanges could radically change in the near future. Therefore, it is urgent to check whether existing motorways, already in service, can be adapted to the new AV and CAV technologies. The article proposes new road geometric design criteria based on the potential performances of automated vehicles and a traffic model to take into consideration the effect of mix traffic flows (Autonomous Driving Vehicles and Traditional ones). These models have been used for analyzing two existing Italian motorways belonging to the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione
