The various layers of interpretations of the libri iurium (law books) provide important suggestions about the study of the ancient documents and the historical research in general. This essay offers a short and essential analysis of the Libro dei Pacta et Conventiones (law book of Vercelli in XIII century) and describes the characteristics of an historical source capable of telling its political, social and cultural environment.
