The special issue of the CMT journal included a number of extended versions of the general lectures presented at the Symposium on Trends in Applications of Mathematics to Mechanics (STAMM), held in Levico, Trento, Italy between September 22-25, 2008. The symposium demonstrated that the combined use of mathematical modeling and numerical computations produced an increasingly more powerful tool for the understanding and reproduction of reality. The combination of mathematics and mechanics had also become essential for science, engineering, medicine, and technology. The included papers provided information about the quality of the invited lectures that were complemented by excellent contributed talks and poster presentations.
