The essay presents the origin and intellectual traditions of affirmation of the concept of mixed government in early modern Polish-Lithuanian state. Subsequently, it aims to analyse the baroque apology of monarchia mixta in the seventeenth-century Poland-Lithuania, in the context of the Commonwealth’s political crisis and decay, undoubtedly combined with its specific form of government. The basis for the considerations is the political thought of Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro, the castellan of Lviv, a Polish politician, statist, and historian.
