Caregiver delle persone con demenza residenti in RSA: un Burden non totalmente alleviato

L’attività di caregiving può comportare ripercussioni psicologiche importanti su chi accudisce il proprio congiunto malato; tra queste la più tipica è chiamata Burden o Burden of Illness (BOI). Essa rappresenta la tipica sindrome del caregiver, che colpisce soprattutto chi è a contatto quotidiano diretto con le persone affette da demenza. Questa ricerca, rivolta ai caregiver informali, ha coinvolto i familiari degli ospiti con demenza residenti in una RSA del Nord Italia. Si è voluto verificare, mediante l’uso del Caregiver Burder Inventory Test, se il BOI dei caregiver fosse completamente annullato dal ricovero presso la RSA, ovvero in un contesto che allevia il peso ssistenziale del familiare che se ne faceva carico in precedenza. La ricerca, parte dunque dall’interrogativo: “I caregiver delle persone affette da demenza residenti in RSA, hanno comunque bisogno di un supporto?”. Questo studio evidenzia la necessità di non dimenticare i bisogni di queste persone. Caregiving activity may have strong psychological repercussions on caregivers of ill relatives; the most common is called Burden or Burden of Illness (BOI). It is known as “the caregiver syndrome” and mainly affects persons in direct daily contact with relatives affected by dementia. This research, addressed to informal caregivers, involved family members of persons with dementia residing in an nursing home located in Northern Italy. Our aim was to check, by means of the Caregiver Burden Inventory Test, whether the BOI of the caregivers was completely removed by the placement of their relative in nursing home, that is, in a context that alleviates the weight of their previous home care giving. Therefore, the study starts from the following question: “Do caregivers of relatives with dementia residing in nursing home need a support anyway?” This study highlights the need not to forget the desires these caregivers still express.
