In the end of the Modern World and in other writings of philosophy of history, Guardini examines the wrenching changes that devastated European society in the transition from modernity to contemporaneity. The individual risks not only to submit to the totality, but also to surrender inwardly to it. In the era of “Mass Man”, the individual loses also every vital and autonomous spiritual dimension. In this context, Guardini sees only in religion and in Catholicism a criterion of intelligence of history. His philosophy of history develops a radical Christocentrism.
