The essay deals with the constitutional implications of the progressive evolution that Irish society has been facing in recent years. Moving from the analysis of the features of the constitutional referendum, the authors address the recent constitutional reforms that follow the vote on equal marriage in 2015 and on abortion in 2018, both of which reveal a profound reconsideration of some cornerstones of the constitutional culture of the country. These recent constitutional amendments demonstrate the importance of a solid democratic consensus to adapt the constitution to evolving social needs and moral values in the context of an increasing emergence of a European minimum standard of fundamental rights protection.
