Wagner’s relationship towards Judaism and the Jews is an extremely intricate and controversial theme. On the basis of Wagner’s essay Das Judentum in der Musik in its two subsequent versions, the article tries to shed light on this ambiguous relationship, steeped in ideology, and to situate it in its corresponding socio-cultural background.
