This article focuses on Ezra Pound’s interest in Arnaut Daniel and Guido Cavalcanti, and aims to demonstrate that his translations of the troubadour and his edition of the Tuscan poet cannot be considered strictly scientific, because he is more concerned about the possibility of making medieval poetry accessible to the largest audience possible rather than producing traditional critical editions. The Authors postulate that Pound used his philological skills to reach accurate comprehension of the source texts, in order to preserve and to transmit intact the aesthetic value of medieval poetry.

Abstract

This article focuses on Ezra Pound’s interest in Arnaut Daniel and Guido Cavalcanti, and aims to demonstrate that his translations of the troubadour and his edition of the Tuscan poet cannot be considered strictly scientific, because he is more concerned about the possibility of making medieval poetry accessible to the largest audience possible rather than producing traditional critical editions. The Authors postulate that Pound used his philological skills to reach accurate comprehension of the source texts, in order to preserve and to transmit intact the aesthetic value of medieval poetry.
