In the last municipal elections held in Turkey in March 2014, a record number of women were elected both as mayors and councilors at the town halls. This is largely the result of a gender-based co-leadership structure implemented by the pro-Kurdish party HDP in all internal and institutional positions. The present article analyzes, from the perspective of contentious politics and the politics of scale, whether the emergence of women co-mayors in southeast Turkey has successfully introduced in the national political agenda the debate on taking concrete measures in order to reach a gender parity of representation.

Abstract
In the last municipal elections held in Turkey in March 2014, a record number of women were elected both as mayors and councilors at the town halls. This is largely the result of a gender-based co-leadership structure implemented by the pro-Kurdish party HDP in all internal and institutional positions. The present article analyzes, from the perspective of contentious politics and the politics of scale, whether the emergence of women co-mayors in southeast Turkey has successfully introduced in the national political agenda the debate on taking concrete measures in order to reach a gender parity of representation.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
