Particle verbs (i.e. morphologically complex verbs that are syntactically separable) show remarkable properties im Cimbrian. While postverbal positionings of the particle (gehöart au ‘stopped’) can be taken to be indicative of its status as a predominantly VO-language, the preverbal position typical of the Germanic OV-languages is possible as well (augehöart). What is more, the particle can also be separated in different positions further to the left, but still in the verbal complex (“particle split”), a phenomenon that is well-known from Dutch and dialectal varieties of German. We investigate the grammatical properties of particle verbs (and related constructions like secondary predicates) in some more details than the previous literature (e.g. GREWENDORF/POLETTO 2005; 2012), addressing the following issues: The OV-pattern (under which also the “splits” can be subsumed) is stable in use among different age groups of speakers, despite its status as a relic. Conversely, the VO-like pattern might have been fostered by related constructions in Romance (in particular with aspectual and motion verbs), yet it also shows interesting parallels to the Germanic VO-type, in particular when it comes to secondary predicates

Abstract
Conversely, the VO-like pattern might have been fostered by related constructions in Romance (in particular with aspectual and motion verbs), yet it also shows interesting parallels to the Germanic VO-type, in particular when it comes to secondary predicatesFile | Dimensione | Formato | |
