Know by comparing: taxonomies and cognitive errors. Comparing is a cognitive process that produces new knowledge. Comparative law and, more generally, comparative sciences use classifications and taxonomies to govern the amount of data that is being studied. Classifications and taxonomies fuel the production of schemes through which we organize our knowledge in long-term memory. When constructing classifications and taxonomies, cognitive errors of various nature can be committed. We must be aware of the possibility of making mistakes. We should avoid that the classifications become rigid cages that prevent the progress of knowledge.
