Paradossi tragici: “dormire una veglia” nel prologo dell’Agamennone di Eschilo (v. 2)

Commentaries on Aeschylus and dictionaries of Greek usually translate the verb koimasthai, found in the second verse of the Agamemnon, with periphrases such as “keep watch at night” (see LSJ9 s.v.). However, a closer analysis of parallel texts seems to show that even in Aeschylus koimomenos has its usual meaning (“to sleep”).
