According to a widely accepted scholars’ opinion the memory of the archaic war between Phocians and Thessalians whose locus classicus is Herodotus (VIII, 27-29) is preserved just by a commemoration rite, a festival to be precise (the Elaphebolia), and is connected just with one sanctuary (at Hyampolis) and just in honour of one god (Artemis). This paper argues instead that an important role was also played by the oracle of Apollon at Abai, as an analysis of the ancient literary sources about this Thessalian-Phocian war, the oracle of Abai and the sanctuary of Hyampolis seems to prove. Moreover, a comparative analysis of these sources and of the archaeological and epigraphic record suggests that the sanctuary discovered in Kalapodi is more likely to be the one of Abai than the one of Hyampolis.
