The planning of a monitoring system installed in river embankments of the Adige river in Northern Italy is presented. The monitoring system allows the acquisition of real-time data and is aimed at assessing the hazard associated with embankment failure. It includes piezometers for measuring the pore pressure below the freatic surface, instruments for measuring the water content above the freatic surface, extensometers and inclinometers for the measurement of vertical and horizontal displacements, and instruments for defining the boundary conditions. The problems related to the selection, calibration and field installation of the instruments are discussed. Finally, a first series of monitoring data is presented for a preliminary assessment of the performance of the monitoring system.
