This book analyses the emergence and the development of a political debate over immigration control within Italian political elite over the last twenty-five years. On the basis of a discourse analytical approach the book challenges the taken for granted nature of contemporary immigration policies by showing how the meaning of the immigration control problem was constructed differently across time and across the political spectrum and by highlighting how different definitions of the problem space have in turn influenced different legitimate policies on the issue.
