In the framework of monopulse sub-arrayed antenna arrays synthesis, this work presents a method for the solution of the compromise problem between sum and difference patterns. The approach is based on an excitation matching strategy to efficiently determine a set of Pareto solutions which represent suitable trade-offs in terms of the number of sub-arrays of the beam-forming network used to generate the difference pattern and the mismatch between a reference difference beam and the synthesized one. Accordingly, the designer can select the most suitable solution on the basis of the project constraints on the desired radiation performance or on the antenna feasibility and costs. Representative results are reported in order to assess potentialities and limitations of the proposed approach and further possible improvements will be eventually discussed.
