Survey of the rural areas of Madaure, Drea and Taoura led to the discovery and topographic and architectural documentation of 16 sites around Madaure,15 to the South of Drea and 9 to the South of Taoura, totaling 40 sites. The sites contain isolated farms, some with burials, agglomerations with a church and a fort, a kiln and a necropolis. The majority of the sites has undergone dramatic transformations in Vandal and Byzantine times. Many pottery shards and coins are scattered on the surface, a phenomenon absent in the regions prospected in the Northern coast area, which is covered with forests. The area around Madaure is and was intensely cultivated. Ceramics show the continuity and intensity of the occupation of the sites until the Arab invasions around 700 AD and possibly also during the following centuries. The presence of churches is another characteristic of the surveyed area, knowing that Taoura was the seat of a bishopric which may have enabled the Christianization of rural areas.
