The corpus of literary works gathered together by the Transmédie project (‘Translations médiévales. Cinq siècles de traductions en français au Moyen Age’) offers a rich variety of data, which provide - from a quantitative as well as qualitative point of view - a reliable and efficient field of investigation subjected to a codicological analysis. This essay’s survey aims to verify the relationship between scribal techniques and physical materials, in order to determine whether scriptorial practices have been influenced by the material used, especially when printing began to replace handwritten manuscripts in the 15th century.

Abstract

The corpus of literary works gathered together by the Transmédie project (‘Translations médiévales. Cinq siècles de traductions en français au Moyen Age’) offers a rich variety of data, which provide - from a quantitative as well as qualitative point of view - a reliable and efficient field of investigation subjected to a codicological analysis. This essay’s survey aims to verify the relationship between scribal techniques and physical materials, in order to determine whether scriptorial practices have been influenced by the material used, especially when printing began to replace handwritten manuscripts in the 15th century.
