Francisco Trenado de Ayllón is the author of "Arte muy curiosa por la qual se enseña muy de rayz el entender y hablar la lengua italiana" (1596), the first Italian grammar aimed for Spanish speakers. This paper presents the methodological principles of this work and the author’s believes, who adopting a contrastive approach (with Spanish and Latin), decided to contribute to the teaching of a second language which has a worthy literary prestige. We analize the relevance of the didactic material according to the learners’ requirements, among which we can find the diplomat corps of the Crown sent to the Italian States.
