The essay reconstructs the iconographic program of the altarpiece painted by Gerolamo Genga for the Church of S. Agostino in Cesena ca. 1518. After correcting a number of wrong identifications which so far had been suggested for a few scenes and figures in the predella as well as in the central panel, it argues that the painting celebrates both the Augustinian Order and its devotion to the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, which at that time was heatedly debated.
