IMAGES ‘OF TRAVELLING’: TROIKA, TRAPS, CARRIAGE ATTENDANTS AND POSTMASTERS IN BYT AND IN THE RUSSIAN LITERATURE OF THE FIRST HALF OF THE 1800s In the Russian literature of the 1800s, the means of transport – an object linked to ‘byt’, that is, to the customs and to the daily life of the period – often becomes the protagonist of an artistic text, the bearer of a spectrum of particular meanings of the culture of the period. Drawing inspiration from a very popular pictorial theme of the first half of the 19th century, that of the various types of transport pulled by horses – so richly represented in fine art prints ‘Daziaro’ –, the paper brings to light the main linguistic-literary aspects which are closely linked to the historical-social particularity of Russian space. The importance of the length of the journey – the ‘road’ – in the Russian culture and the centrality of some categories, such as ‘slowness’ and ‘speed’, are analysed in the work of authors, such as A. Puškin, N. Gogol’ and V. Sollogub.
