Information systems to support university programmes: a case study

Recent years have seen a widespread use of ICT systems in managing and operating programmes and courses at universities. The main usage has been the distribution of educational material using e-learning systems (Learning Management Systems - LMS), but many other functionalities and features are needed that are not related with educational aspects.These functionalities, like the enrolment of students or the administrative services are normally separated from the educational component, i.e., the LMS. The paper presents the idea of strictly connecting the two worlds, the administrative part and tjhe educational part of an educational institution, by the addition of some functionalities typical of an information system to a LMS, in order to fully support universitiy programmes.
