The article studies the theoretical framework concerning economic development agreements (EDAs), as elaborated by scholars and tribunals in the mid-20th Century, and puts it to the test of current contractual practice. The article analyses a number of recent investment contracts in the natural resources field, focusing particularly on preambles, employment and local development obligations, and choice of law clauses. The article argues that the framework behind EDAs has evolved to embed sustainable development and towards the application of domestic law.
