This chapter reexamines the crisis in Greek intra-federal relations – specifically border disputes – in terms of an opportunity to reshape the balance of power, rather than merely as a failure of alliance. It shifts the perspective by viewing conflict resolution not as a process of final pacification, but as a mechanism for adaptation and resilience within the koinon. Three case studies are analysed where internal tensions benefitted the federal structure: the dispute between Epidauros and Corinth (members of the Achaian League); the dispute between Koroneia and Lebadeia (arbitrated by the Boiotians); and finally the dispute of Melitaia and Pereia (members of the Aitolian League). Achaians, Boiotians and Aitiolians, by dynamically managing borders and manipulating the power balance between its members, used these internal crises in order to enhance its stability and future resilience. The resilience elements promoted by these koina, in fact, restrain hegemonial influence of some members, prevented overgrowth of others and protected smaller political communities through provisions concerning federal taxes and common lands.

Abstract
The resilience elements promoted by these koina, in fact, restrain hegemonial influence of some members, prevented overgrowth of others and protected smaller political communities through provisions concerning federal taxes and common lands.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
