dditive manufacturing (AM) refers to those fabrication processes that build threedimensional (3D) objects by means of adding material rather than subtracting as in conventional manufacturing approaches. The layer-by-layer approach used by the AM technologies opens unprecedented design possibilities, allowing for freedom in complexity that, most of the time, is impossible to reach with the traditional manufacturing technologies. Such design and fabrication freedom has benefited the field of cellular materials. Cellular materials are porous materials, whose effective properties are not only dependent on the material they are made of but also on the architecture in which their cells are organized. Cellular materials are frequently encountered with complex geometries that have become manufacturable with AM.

Abstract

dditive manufacturing (AM) refers to those fabrication processes that build threedimensional (3D) objects by means of adding material rather than subtracting as in conventional manufacturing approaches.
