Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at high risk for development of critical illness and for adverse outcomes after ICU admission. In these patients, acute kidney injury frequently occurs, and this acute-on-chronic kidney disease that contributes to a progression of long-term kidney dysfunction, potentially leading to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). An integrated multidisciplinary approach is required to manage the multiorgan failure in patients with chronic kidney disease, to minimize the progression of kidney dysfunction during their critical illness, and to ensure appropriate follow-up and long-term management of their CKD.
