Taking as its starting point Cassirer’s important essay Die Begriffsform im mythischen Denken (1922), and extending the analysis to the second volume of the Philosophie der symbolischen Formen, Das mythische Denken (1925), as well as to the essay Individuum und Kosmos in der Philosophie der Renaissance (1927), the following pages aim to outline how—and with what consequences—a specific interest in astrology gradually emerges within the context of Cassirer’s intense intellectual exchange with Aby Warburg. Particular attention will be paid to astrology’s ‘hybrid’ status and to the place it occupies both within the broader framework of Renaissance civilization and in relation to the genesis of modern science.
